Diabetes, Metabolism and Infectious Disease

Viruses have followed every evolutionary step on Earth and have had a major impact on human history. Viral infections are still among the leading causes of death, and there is a high and increasing likelihood of extreme infectious virus epidemics like COVID-19 in the coming decades. A growing body of evidence indicates that enteroviruses in particular, but also other viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, can lead to the development or progression of diabetes. Conversely, diabetes can increase the severity of a viral infection.
