Printed medicines in the hospital pharmacy – what matters?

Production facilities of hospital pharmacies have the important role of supplying non-commercially available medicine upon physicians’ request. Thus, the pharmacy ensures the supply of medicines for every patients’ need. Paediatric wards especially have a great necessity of dosage forms with individualised amounts of API. Besides commonly manufactured preparations, 3D printing may expand the spectrum of extemporaneous compounded individualised medicines. To be able to implement this process in everyday routine, regulatory requirements need to be fulfilled. However, consistent quality of the printed medicines must be ensured. Which printer and printing technique is suitable and what else needs to be considered? This session gives an overview about how printing medicines may be performed using the technique of semi solid extrusion (SSE) and will discuss the challenges faced in the hospital setting.
